The beauty of a walking break in Devon is that there’s a walk for everyone, whatever your age or ability. Stay at Otter Falls and start with a nice easy ramble to explore our 40-acre estate or take the bridleways and trails that open up to the nearby Devon countryside.
If the sea is calling, where better to walk than the only county in the UK with two separate coastlines? Head south and pick up the South West Coast Path for a head-clearing, leg-stretching hike. Or look inland to the moors, where you can walk for miles, often without seeing another soul.
Otter Falls is the ideal base for your UK walking holiday. With so many great walks on your doorstep, luxury accommodation and even the option to sink into your own private hot tub after a long day’s walking, you’ll struggle to find a more perfect UK walking break.
There are plenty of local walks around Otter Falls, some short and easy and others more challenging, but none needing a car to get to. Our 40-acre estate is the best place to start, with plenty of well-signposted, well- maintained trails, surrounded by nature. We’re lucky enough to be situated in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with scenery and views to take your breath away. The trails and pathways at Otter Falls connect into the local trails, taking in pretty villages, rivers and woodland. A particular favourite of guests is the Otter River walk, which is nice and easy, just right for breath of fresh air after lunch. Check out our map of local walks.
Now it’s time to pull on your boots and explore Devon. Did you know Devon has twice as many AONBs as the average for England as a whole – that’s just one reason it’s among the UK’s best walking holiday destinations. The South West Coast Path covers both the north and the south coasts of Devon and offers some great coastal walks. You can follow the trail along the Jurassic Coast or take a day trip up to the North Devon Coast AONB. There are circular walks too, which offer a satisfying mix of coast and countryside.
Two national parks complete the picture, Dartmoor and Exmoor. Experience the wild open spaces of Dartmoor, or head to Exmoor, where Devon meets Somerset and look out for the famous Exmoor ponies on a climb of Dunkery Beacon.
When the day’s walking is over, what bliss to come home to a Cosy Cottage or Luxury Lodge, where you can relax and wind down. Lake and woodland views add to the peaceful atmosphere and you can even stay in a lodge or cottage with a hot tub – perfect for soothing your aching limbs. The Tickled Trout Bar has a great menu and selection of drinks at the bar, and a warm welcome. If you have some energy left after your walk, a dip in the indoor swimming pool could be the perfect end to the day. And don’t forget, we’re dog friendly too, so your four-legged friend doesn’t have miss out on all those extra walkies. All in all, our stunning location, the Devon countryside and coastlines, and a little bit of luxury at the end of a long day’s hike, surely there can be nowhere better than Otter Falls for a UK walking break.
